Cả hai phiên bản iMac được ra mắt đều có chung nhiều tính năng phần cứng và thiết kế, giống như những gì các phiên bản trước đây có. Có màn hình 5K 27 inch có độ sáng lên tới 500 nits hoặc màn hình 21.5 inch 1080p hoặc 4K, trang bị 4 cổng USB-A, 4 cổng Thunderbolt 3 Type-C, khe cắm thẻ SD, giắc cắm tai nghe 3.5 mm và giắc cắm Gigabit Ethernet. So với iMac Pro, iMac tiêu chuẩn chỉ có 2 cổng Thunderbolt 3, đầu đọc thẻ SD và giắc cắm Ethernet có tốc độ chậm hơn.

Tại mặt sau vẫn là vị trí đặt các cổng kết nối, vì mặt trước chỉ toàn là kính là một phần của cụm màn hình nên không thể bằng cách nào đó đưa các cổng kết nối lên, còn phần cạnh bên thì lại quá mỏng nó cũng chỉ vừa để ép cụm màn vào. Tại mặt trước, phần đường viền khá lớn, vẫn chưa được “cắt tỉa” khiến người dùng cảm nhận màn hình hiển thị nhỏ hơn so với các thông số được đưa ra, phần chân đế khó điều chỉnh cũng là một trong những điểm yếu của thiết bị này.

“Nội thất bên trong” là nơi Apple đã thực hiện tất cả các thay đổi trong năm nay, mang đến các tùy chọn bộ xử lý 6 và 8 nhân mới và các tùy chọn card đồ họa mới hơn từ AMD. “Ngôi sao chính” của iMac là chip Core i9 8 nhân đã được trang bị cho iMac 27 inch.
